ELINGS PARK CAL STATE XC & SD

Editor’s Note: Todd trained for Elings by training at Santa Barbara City College in the Vickis 3000m race. Todd was 3rd in the race with a time:

Santa Barbara’s Elings Park hosted the fifth stop of the California State Series. Racers were treated with new singletrack sections that had been trimmed over the winter. This weekend was possible thanks to Ed Brown and Dave Phreaner. Saturday’s downhill and Super D were reserved. Sunday saw the cross-country and double slalom. This year, the bike festival and expo area were located on the ocean side. All of the racing was gathered in one place. It was perfect weather, 70 degrees.

Cross-Country racers completed a loop of 6 miles that covered the whole park. The Expert/Pros raced 4 laps, while the Sports raced 3. Beginners ran 2 laps. There were many climbs, but they were short and steep. This course was very hard. You were constantly on the bike, whether you were climbing or not, through a lot of technical singletrack and soft turns. Passing was not a problem, surprising enough. It was easy to follow, and it didn’t matter if you were a climber or a descender. The course was a test of your bike handling skills. There were more jerseys that had been crushed than any other race this year. It was an indication that Elings Park is a true race track for mountain bikes.

Our Mountain Bike Team is there to enforce any race that takes place in Platinum Performances’ backyard. Our home field advantage was in our favor. The team won 10 games! The team was also represented by Team Sho-Air. With only three races remaining, the race for the Coed Team Series Award is heating up. Only 20 points separate Platinum and Sho-Air (before Elings). This weekend’s top Platinum riders were Bob Nisbet, Terry Dahl (Exp 40-44), Chase Schoen and Luke Werkhoven (Spt clyd 30-39), Adam Poytress (Spt 25-30), Sue Fish (Spt Wmn 50+), MarkFennell(Spt 45-49), Seth Zaleski (19-24), Amanda Schaper (19-29), and Chester Gillmore (19-24). Chester was awarded the Stud of the Day. He won the Beginner race, his first mountain bike race.

Class. On the same day, he was upgraded to the Sport Class and finished 2nd! It was five laps, with very little recovery time between.

The following silver medalists did not make it onto the MBAs Top 10 List:

Steve Silva (Exp 50-54) and Bobby Langin Jr. (Exp 19-24) are Chester

Gillmore (Spt 19-24). The third result is not included in the Top 10 Results.

Place finishers: Todd Booth (Exp 35-39), and Doug Urbach (42-44)

Ron Takeda (Open 40+ Wmn) and Sue Fish were the Super D winners.

Team !!!!, great job! !
